Isologous Oxygen, Sulfur, and Selenium Compounds as Probes of Acetylcholine Receptors
نویسنده
چکیده
Evidence is presented that while the conformations of acetylcholine and acetylthiolcholine are different, acetylthiolcholine and acetylselenolcholine are structurally and conformationally very similar. Experiments with sulfur and selenium isologs of acetylcholine, choline, and local anesthetics suggest that the active sites of receptors of the electroplax and of electric eel acetylcholinesterase are different, but are compatible with the postulate that acetylcholine receptors of axonal and synaptic excitable membranes are similar.

Selenium redox biochemistry of zinc-sulfur coordination sites in proteins and enzymes.
Selenium has been increasingly recognized as an essential element in biology and medicine. Its biochemistry resembles that of sulfur, yet differs from it by virtue of both redox potentials and stabilities of its oxidation states. Selenium can substitute for the more ubiquitous sulfur of cysteine and as such plays an important role in more than a dozen selenoproteins. We have chosen to examine z...
متن کاملInvolvement of a broccoli COQ5 methyltransferase in the production of volatile selenium compounds.
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for animals and humans but becomes toxic at high dosage. Biologically based Se volatilization, which converts Se into volatile compounds, provides an important means for cleanup of Se-polluted environments. To identify novel genes whose products are involved in Se volatilization from plants, a broccoli (Brassica oleracea var italica) cDNA encoding COQ...
متن کاملSelenium Metabolism in Plants: Molecular Approaches
Selenium (Se) is placed in Group VIA of the Periodic Table. Its chemistry is similar to sulfur (S). Practically all small organic selenium compounds are isologues of corresponding sulfur compounds. With a few exceptions, they are also isologues of sulfur amino acids or derivatives thereof. Selenium plays an indispensable role for humans, animals and microorganisms. It is beneficial for the meta...
متن کاملImproved selectivity for Pb(II) by sulfur, selenium and tellurium analogues of 1,8-anthraquinone-18-crown-5: synthesis, spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and computational studies.
We report here a series of heteroatom-substituted macrocycles containing an anthraquinone moiety as a fluorescent signaling unit and a cyclic polyheteroether chain as the receptor. Sulfur, selenium, and tellurium derivatives of 1,8-anthraquinone-18-crown-5 (1) were synthesized by reacting sodium sulfide (Na2S), sodium selenide (Na2Se) and sodium telluride (Na2Te) with 1,8-bis(2-bromoethylethyle...
متن کاملFormation of hollow nanocrystals through the nanoscale Kirkendall effect.
Hollow nanocrystals can be synthesized through a mechanism analogous to the Kirkendall Effect, in which pores form because of the difference in diffusion rates between two components in a diffusion couple. Starting with cobalt nanocrystals, we show that their reaction in solution with oxygen and either sulfur or selenium leads to the formation of hollow nanocrystals of the resulting oxide and c...
